20 Proven Things All Great Leaders Always Do
20 Proven Things All Great Leaders Always Do
In an unstable, inconsistent world, great leaders are consistent and stable.
Consistently do these 20 things and you’ll be a great leader.
Tell the truth.
Demand the truth.
Act in the best interest of their organization.
Get results through others.
Celebrate the success of others.
Challenge the status quo.
Press into the future while honoring the past.
Try.
Receive criticism.
Learn.
Inspire.
Improve.
Encourage.
Listen more than speak.
Take responsibility.
Show gratitude.
Pursue clarity and specificity.
Engage in self-reflection.
Act in alignment with who they are.
Rest.

#32..the lesson you learned....
comment on Randy Pausch and the legacy he leaves....
some of his lessons:
Never underestimate the importance of having fun.....I'm going to keep having fun because there's no other way to play it
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted
No one is pure evil. Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you.
Brick walls are there for a reason. They are there to give us chance to show how badly we want something, and they keep out those who do not want it badly enough.
It's not about achieving yoiur dreams but living your life. If you live your life the right way, the dreams will come to you.
We can't change the cards we're dealt, just how we play the hand. If I am not as depressed as you think I should be, I'm sorry to disappoint you.
and, as always, it's better to be a Tigger than an Eeyore

#28 Oprah's story (pp 134-136)
what did you think of it?
what do you think of her?
is her "big heart" the reason for her phenomenal success?
#27 the cars in the Bronx , NYC (poor) and in Palo Alto, California (rich) it's in the book
how can we apply the lessons of this "experiment" to our life here at IDCI ?
Last semester's culminating project/final exam project (20% of final)
last semester's culminating activity (20%)
GPP 3O1 Leadership Culminating Task
This assignment is the culminating activity for this semester. It is based on all the leadership activites you participated in this semester. This assignment is worth 20% of your final mark in this course. It is 2/3 of the exam component of the course .
Leadership Scrapbook (20% of Final Mark in GPP 3O1)...create a “scrapbook”/report (call it what you want) of your own design which includes the following:
(You will need to access photos from:W:\mcguchan leadership , the IDCI website, facebook ,...wherever... decorate your scrapbook with stickers, sketches, visual representations, accessories etc which contribute to the overall presentation of you as a leadership student at IDCI)
❏ a cover page
❏ a table of contents
❏ This was the semester that was...describe in detail, the duties that you performed during your classroom and leadership activities in which you participated
❏ Caught in the moment..include pictures of yourself in action at IDCI this semester with brief explanations of what was happening at the time
❏ Changes...changes?....describe how you feel your personal leadership criteria and style developed over the course of the semester
❏ Goals for the Future... list your top 5 realistic goals. Do not include materialistic goals like “I want an Escalade”. Include goals such as “I will get a part-time babysitting job”, or “I will get an A in math this year”.Each goal must have three steps you will take to reach the goal. .. I will complete all of my assignments and turn them in on time. 2. I will study with a group before each test. 3. I will make time after school to see my teacher if I have questions.
❏ IDCI...include an IDCI leadership pamphlet (see example) which includes school name and logo; a list of activities/clubs offered and our commitment to activities segment. Assessment will be based on the completeness and accuracy of the list, creativity and aesthetic appeal. The finished product should be something that could be distributed / shown at grade 8 Parents’ Night, for example
❏ School Spirit.....capture our school spirit with photos and/or drawings.
❏ The Best Thing About Me...... create a collage with words and/or pictures that tells the best thing about you
❏ Success!....describe a time in the semester when you were especially proud of an event or activity that you were involved in and why you feel that way
❏ Lasting Memory..... write a 5-7sentence paragraph describing your one single favorite memory of being a leader at our school (not a big event or activity but a single moment that will live on with you for some reason). Include a photo or illustration to accompany the paragraph.
❏ Success!....not really...not this time...describe a time in the semester when your plans/goals did not achieve the success you had hoped for and explain what you learned from the experience
❏ Hmm..not as easy as I thought...describe a specific barrier that you encountered in your leadership experiences and how you attempted to overcome it....include a visual representation of this experience
❏ I Can Do This.....describe a specific example when you needed to use effective communication skills (including conflict resolution skills perhaps) during your leadership experiences and how these skills helped you in this particular situation
❏ Together, We Can Do This...describe how the group context of this class helped you in your practical experiences and what you learned about working with others along the way
❏ The Tough Stuff...discuss the issues of diversity, tolerance and violence prevention and how they came into play throughout your leadership experiences
❏ The Real Meaning of Leadership ...... write what you believe is the“real” meaning of leadership. Explain what experiences have you had as a student leader this year that have led you to this conclusion? Draw a picture or include a photo(s) that illustrates your point.
❏ Now, That One I Remember......think back to all of those video clips (not feature films)....which one stuck?...which one had an impact?....explain and include picture
❏ Quotes I Can Live By ......Include at least 5quotes that you will live by made by famous (or not-so-famous) people. These may be quotes you heard in class, quotes made by famous people in history, or sayings your Great Aunt Myrtle has said over the years. No repeats!
❏ Leading away from school....explain how you have taken leadership roles in non-school activities in the past year (coaching, captaining, tutoring, setting an example etc)
❏ You’ll Figure it Out...include one other category not represented in this task.....explain it,....illustrate it...represent it...whatever
❏ What now? (Was it worth it?)...describe the thing you take from this course as you continue your academic career. It may be a skill, a new-found confidence, an attitude adjustment of some sort or even new knowledge...something of use you think you will remember....don’t forget to visually represent this
❏ The Sign of the Times.... Get everyone in the leadership class to autograph this “scrapbook”. You also need to get at least one teacher (not including me) to sign your book. You must get them to sign this after your book is finished. You may not get autographs on the day that the assignment is due.
❏ Picture This! include a current photo of yourself and decorate the page with a creative border.
*Feel free to add any other elements you think will contribute to this representation of you in the leadership class*
BONUS**Reflection of Me ......Ask your parent(s)/guardian to write a letter about how they perceive you as being a leader outside of school and include it ...Include a photo of you and this family member and briefly summarize the nature of your relationship
#25 Belonging
other than family, identify the group you feel most connected to and explain why this connection is important to you.....it might be your basketball team, your church youth group, your 4H group, your writers' workshop class...whatever...what is it for you and what role do you see it playing in your life
#24 pg 95 ...lions and tigers and zebras...oh my

book of awesome entries
After giving up looking for a good song on the radio, you press the scan button and the first station that comes up is playing your favorite song.
Music is a way that many of us (including me) use to relax, change your mood, escape from your problems, ect. Every morning on my way to school I am desperate to find music to listen too because of all the talk radio I have to avoid. But it is very rare to find a good song in the morning. I usually scan through all the stations twice, and then resort to using the scan button. But today on the way to school, I was happily surprised to my favorite song at the moment. This can affect my mood for the rest of the day.
Chipping out of the sand and making the putt to save par. Awesome.
I am sure that many others have this problem as well. When this happens, it is truly...AWESOME
When the lights dim at a concert
Anyone who has been to a concert knows they are the bomb in general; loud music, bright lights and big video screens, topped off with cute guitar players or pretty back-up dancers and interesting props. But the moment when you're most excited about these things isn't in the middle of your favourite song, or after the band has left the stage and the crowd is cheering for an encore because they haven't have quite enough. It's in that instant, after watching the arena fill with enthusiastic fans just like yourself, when the lights finally dim and you know your mind is about to be blown. The lights go down, the audience roars, and the anticipation turns into adrenaline as you prepare to rock out.
Awesome!
Feeling as though nothing is going right. Not getting played in sports, not getting the girl of your dreams to like you in that way...not getting the new girl you like to like you in that way, and not doing the best in school. The way to pass it off as nothing doesn't work, it feels good for a bit and then you realize, how is this really helping me in the long run. Then you start to think am I dumb, whats wrong with me.
Then it all starts to happen you slowly boost your grades, get involved try and make a difference. Even the girl you like seems to be looking your way and you have people you can trust surrounding you who are supportive. Sports get easier and your skills increase. You get more confidence and it shows in every aspect of your life. you feel energized and happy about your life for the first time in a while. AWESOME!!
Have you ever had it, that you look at the clock and realize your shift ended a half an hour ago but you nor your boss noticed until just then? That's a whole half an hour you could have been hanging out with friends, or playing xbox. A whole half an hour extra that you get paid! A whole half hour extra of money that can go towards better times with friends, and more xbox games
When you take the first bite into a warm, cheesey, saucey pizza and all the cheese doesnt slide off with the toppings. Only a few pizza masters have gotten the perfect combination of temperature, and cheese to sauce ratio so you never have to exprience ruining that nice new white shirt you just bought, all because you took a bite of pizza.
AWESOME!
The moment when you first take your cellphone out of your pocket and you recieve a text that very second.
You take your phone out of your pocket to just check the time or even just check bbm status updates and that one person with the oddly perfect timing texts you as soon as you look at your screen, its like they knew exactly when to send the message. This makes for a perfect respond time on your end as well back to the other person. Just makes for an overall awesome timing situation.
Awesome.
Hitting That Impossible Golf Shot That You Didn't Think You Could Do :)
Nothing is better as a golfer than hitting that insane shot over trees, in a tough lie or even draining a bomb of a putt to save par. Its that awesome feeling of adrenaline you get after you hit one of these shots that gets you pumped up
AWESOME!
The split second you step on to the cold arena ice with a little too much water left from the Zamboni. You take a deep breathe as the crisp frozen air hits your face through your mask. This is the crucial sixty minutes of your life when nothing in the world matters except the tightly tied skates on your feet and the freshly tapped stick in your glove fighting every battle like its your last to win that all Canadian game. When you're on that bench butting shoulders and taking in all that you see on the other side of the boards. Spitting out that bloody mouth guard to take a drink of that water and feel it dripping down your jersey. Jumping over the boards for your next chance at victory. There's seconds left in the tied game, you're fiercely skating towards the net making the final shot. You see that puck hit the mesh just as the buzzer goes, and suddenly you're at the bottom of that dog pile.
Awesome.
That feeling you get when you hear the dryer just finished. So you run to the dryer, pull out your comfiest pajamas and sweater, and put them on as fast as you can. Trying not to let the warmness escape. That fresh, clean smell and how warm the clothes are, but only for about 20 seconds. Those 20 seconds, are 20 awesome seconds. Lovin` fresh laundry.
